Went there after some business on a Monday afternoon. Had Linda's spiked tomato bisque which is possibly some of the best soup I have ever had.
Next the homemade chicken salad sandwich - this was perfection! Half cut red seedless grapes in the mix was the right amount of sweet and texture. The bread used was amazing (and I dont normally gush about chicken salad).
This is a must visit if u find urself in Brownwood.

Steve's Market and Deli, Dining from Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast

Steve's Market and Deli is a fun place to eat when you are staying with us at Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast. They serve a great menu of things like, Black Bean Bisque Soup or Katies Chipotle Corn Bisque Soup. A favorite sandwich is the Ray Bourbon with a great bourbon sauce or the Shrimp Nachos. You will also find desserts like Dublin Dr. Pepper cake and great teas of coffee. They serve Fair Trade Peace Coffee.
They are only open during the week from Monday to Friday from 11 to 3. So if you are here during the week try them out for lunch.

Wow, Steve!

A friend and I came in and I had your Split Pea Soup. This was absolutely wonderful! I have never had it before nor have I ever wanted it. Tired it there and loved it!

Is there any way that you would be willing to share your recipe with me or tell me some of your ingredients. I would really like to try and make some for my family. They look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them it was so good.

Morning Cathy, Sorry it took so long to get back with you. We're glad you enjoyed our Soup. I don't cook by recipe so I'll give you the general, quick basics of the Split Pea Soup.

4 Boxes Chicken Broth
1 small can Beef Consomme
2 Med Bags Frozen Peas
Chopped Garlic
2 Diced Yellow Onions
3 Tomatoes
2 individual Chipotle Peppers in adobo sauce
1/2 bunch fresh Cilantro
3 teaspoons Cumin
1 teaspoon Black Pepper
1 quart Heavy Cream
shredded parmesan
crushed Fritos

Place chopped onion and chopped garlic into soup pot. Add chicken broth and beef consomme. Turn heat to med and bring to slow boil. Add frozen peas and cook for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to low. Chop tomatoes, 2 chipotle peppers, and 1/2 bunch of washed cilantro and add to soup pot. Blend with immersion blender or puree in blender/food processor in small batches. While on low heat add cumin, black pepper and heavy cream. Serve soon with grated parmesan if desired. Crushed Fritos are also very good served on top! Gives it another layer of flavor and that's usually well received.

Pure BS. The first season of this show was already “in the can”, so the heat excuse doesn’t wash.

However, it is well known that they were turning hogs loose for this show. A friend of mine saw them turn them out of a trailer at a golf course and then pretend to be catching them to save the country club etc.

I saw the check written by the production company for one of the hogs that they later turned loose.

Texas really does have a legitimate hog problem. They are destroying crops, property and in some cases, livestock. However, turning them loose for a show is fake and it’s wrong."

Every November as communities throughout the country take time to celebrate Veterans Day, I am grateful that I have the privilege through the efforts of the Pat Tillman Foundation to honor military families and the sacrifices they make each and every day of the year. I am often asked what I enjoy most about the work that we do at the Foundation and the answer is simple – spending time and interacting with our amazing Tillman Military Scholars.

In June, the Pat Tillman Foundation welcomed the third class of Scholars into the Tillman Community by investing over $916,000 in educational scholarships. It was a highly competitive application process that saw over 1200 applications narrowed down to the 60 outstanding individuals that were selected. This summer, I had the pleasure of spending several days in Maryland at our annual Pat Tillman Legacy Summit with 90 of our 171 Tillman Military Scholars and was honored to see and hear first-hand the impact that Pat's life, the Foundation and our supporters have made in their lives.

As I listened to the Scholars share their very personal stories with me, explaining why they chose to serve, what their experience was like and the challenges they face upon their return, it is clear that there is still a tremendous amount of work that needs to be accomplished. In addition to a lack of understanding by the general population, servicemembers are returning at unprecedented rates to an unstable economy and highly competitive job market resulting from high unemployment rates. Obtaining a degree is no longer an ambitious goal, but rather a required step to ensure economic stability. Through the Tillman Military Scholars program our goal is to bridge the gaps left by the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. By removing obstacles that would prohibit a servicemember or spouse from achieving academic success, the program aims to provide the financial and educational resources needed to prevent undeserved debt and establish a foundation for greater career opportunities.

With Wildfire Risk High, Military Alters Training

CAMP SWIFT, Texas — Camp Swift, a training area for Texas soldiers, lies several miles north of the area charred this week by the most destructive wildfire in Texas history. But 1,500 acres of the camp burned in a different fire last month, after a soldier used a grenade simulator in an unauthorized place.

“This stuff went up like a Roman candle,” said Col. Robert Crow, the commander of the training centers for the Texas Army National Guard, as he gestured toward dead pine trees.

As the worst one-year drought in Texas history wears on, officials at Camp Swift and other military installations around the state are figuring out how to keep training while reducing fire risks.

Some large fires have begun this year on firing ranges, including a 3,700-acre blaze that started last week and is now mostly contained at Fort Hood (in total over 14,000 acres have burned on the base's range since June, officials say). At Camp Bowie, a Texas Army National Guard training site roughly 150 miles northwest of Austin, tracer fire sparked a 4,000-acre blaze this spring.

Billy Rhoads, the fire chief at Fort Hood, estimated that more than 50 fires had occurred since the drought began, “and I may be low on that,” he added.

Fort Sam Houston, near San Antonio, has had four small fires this year, as opposed to two last year, according to Karla Gonzalez, a base spokeswoman.

The tinderbox conditions across Texas seem likely to continue: La Niña, a Pacific Ocean phenomenon that experts blame for the drought, has returned and is expected to persist into the winter.

The military is making adjustments. In May, Crow banned the use of tracer ammunition at all Texas Army National Guard camps, including Camp Swift and Camp Bowie. (Other military personnel also train at these camps.) Tracers, which are normally fired every fifth round, are phosphorous-tipped, allowing the trajectory to be a visible red streak, but they are also highly flammable. Crow has also banned the use of most pyrotechnics, including smoke grenades and artillery simulators. The areas where soldiers are allowed to smoke cigarettes have shrunk as well.

In past years, devices like smoke grenades did not generally cause issues, but “now they’re just as culpable to start a fire as a lit match,” Crow said.

For a number of years, my family passed through Brownwood every few months on trips from Austin to Lubbock to visit relatives. We generally timed it to have lunch at Underwood’s Cafeteria, which serves barbecue, all the sides and deservedly famous rolls. The kids called it Underwear’s, based on a misreading of the enormous sign out front when they were younger.

About six years ago, while researching a guidebook on hiking in Central Texas, I discovered Lake Brownwood State Park, home of some nice trails and, in my humble opinion, the state’s coolest cabins. These experiences, and the fact that my mother had been born in nearby Rising Star, represented the extent of my knowledge of this area. I decided it was time that changed.

I grabbed my 23-year-old daughter, Holley, a fellow outdoor enthusiast and fan of wine and food, and headed out for three days in Brownwood. Located near the geographic center of the state on Pecan Bayou, which feeds the Colorado River, the town became a county seat in 1857, a railroad stop in 1885 and, by 1910, a junction of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe and Frisco railroads, all of which kept it bustling for decades. Camp Bowie, just outside of town, served as a World War II training camp from 1940 to 1946, with eight divisions passing through and as many as 30,000 men on site at any one time, including German prisoners of war. In more recent years, the town and surrounding Hill Country have attracted hunters, fishing enthusiasts and those seeking a respite from the big city, including my daughter and me.

Our visit, most fortunately, fell on the second Friday of the month, when Brennan Vineyards in Comanche hosts a dinner (reservations required). Nearly 60 people from near and far, many of them dressed to the nines, gathered in Brennan’s limestone production facility to sample the winery’s signature product, a Viognier, and then strolled through a row of lighted trees to the Austin House next door. Dinner featured black-eyed pea bisque, beef tenderloin or herb-crusted fish, hominy mash and sauteed squash, and a winter fruit tart — served with three wines. The food was excellent, the company even better. Our table mates were well-read, well-traveled and generally charming. A White House state dinner couldn’t have topped it.
Open for six years, the winery began with the purchase of the historic McCrary house as a weekend home for owner Pat Brennan’s Fort Worth-based family. The structure now serves as a tasting room, open Wednesday through Sunday, with complimentary tastings on weekends.

Bob Williams has welcomed a new visitor to Ranch Hands Rescue, a severely malnourished horse named "Honey Boy."

"We have to grind up his food. We have to soak up his hay and all of his food because he can't chew it," said Williams.

Williams says Honey Boy's former owner in Brown County left the horse tied up with minimal food and water for months, and the neglect may have been going on for years. When news of his condition reached the owners of Steves' Market and Deli in Brownwood, they jumped at the chance to lend a helping hand.

"It was shocking just to see the animal and the condition he was in, it's our responsibility as good neighbors to help our neighbors in Argyle to take care of an animal in Argyle that came from our area," said Steve Puckett and Steve Harris in Brownwood.

The ranch relies on donations to be able to rehabilitate abused and neglected animals, so they are creating a "Save Honey Boy" fundraiser to make sure he gains the 800 pounds he has lost.

"Once you find out, once you know something is going on, you have to stand up. You know you can take two roads, you can either stand up or you can just turn a blind eye," said Harris.

Not turning a blind eye on Honey Boy, Puckett and Harris got the ball rolling by making a $100 donation of their own.

     For over two centuries, brave men and women have laid down their lives in defense of our great Nation. These heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice so we may uphold the ideals we all cherish. On this Memorial Day, we honor the generations of Americans who have fought and died to defend our freedom.

     Today, all who wear the uniform of the United States carry with them the proud legacies of those who have made our Nation great, from the patriots who fought at Lexington and Concord to the troops who stormed the beaches at Normandy. Ordinary men and women of extraordinary courage have, since our earliest days, answered the call of duty with valor and unwavering devotion. From Gettysburg to Kandahar, America's sons and daughters have served with honor and distinction, securing our liberties and laying a foundation for lasting peace.

     On this solemn day in which Americans unite in remembrance of our country's fallen, we also pray for our military personnel and their families, our veterans, and all who have lost loved ones. As a grateful Nation, we forever carry the selfless sacrifice of our fallen heroes in our hearts, and we share the task of caring for those they left behind.

     In his second Inaugural Address, in the midst of the Civil War, President Lincoln called on our embattled Nation "to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations." On this Memorial Day, and every day, we bear a heavy burden of responsibility to uphold the founding principles so many died defending. I call on all Americans to come together to honor the men and women who gave their lives so that we may live free, and to strive for a just and lasting peace in our world.

     In honor of our fallen service members, the Congress, by a joint resolution approved May 11, 1950, as amended (36 U.S.C. 116), has requested the President issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. The Congress, by Public Law 106 579, has also designated 3:00 p.m. local time on that day as a time for all Americans to observe, in their own way, the National Moment of Remembrance.

     NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, as a day of prayer for permanent peace, and I designate the hour beginning in each locality at 11:00 a.m. of that day as a time to unite in prayer. I also ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.

     I request the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff until noon on this Memorial Day on all buildings, grounds, and naval vessels throughout the United States and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control. I also request the people of the United States to display the flag at half staff from their homes for the customary forenoon period.
