We brew it up fresh into a beautiful "pinkish red"!

Republic of Tea Acai Green Review

A Very Different Green Tea Indeed

Summary : This is once of the more different green teas you can have. Indeed, it's taste more like a blueberry herbal tea. Because of this, if you enjoy berry flavored herbal teas...bluerberry in particular, you'll love this one. But if searching for a more traditional green tea flavor, look elsewhere, since you won't find it here!

In Loving Memory of our Faithful Friend Belle

(March 1995) - (July 06, 2012)

We Only Wanted You

They say memories are golden, well maybe that is true.
We never wanted memories, we only wanted you.
A million times we needed you, a million times we cried.
If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died.
In life we loved you dearly, in death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a place no one could ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane,
We'd walk the path to heaven and bring you back again.
Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

The Toughest Sissy in the World: The Moment I Triumphed Over My Bullies

Steve Harris in a "Louganis Sweater "- Dallas '85.
"Greg is, and always has been, a great inspiration."

The Toughest Sissy in the World: The Moment I Triumphed Over My Bullies
Greg Louganis Gold-medal-winning Olympic diver

I almost want to thank all the bullies in my life: the ones who called me "n*gger," "retard," "sissy boy," and "f*ggot"; those who threatened to throw punches at me and took my lunch money at the bus stop; those who actually threw punches at me and rubbed my face in asphalt; my dad, who whipped me with his belt until I did a dive I was too scared to do in my regular practice; the coaches who belittled me and intimidated me into pushing myself beyond what I thought I was capable of; and the man who raped me at knifepoint, whom I then stayed with for another six years. They all helped shape me, and without those experiences I could not be the person I am today. I had to learn to "forgive" myself and then find it in my heart to "forgive" them and even bless the light in them, no matter how dim that light was. But thanking them would be going too far, and it would be inaccurate. In the end it was my inner sense of self, my willpower and determination, that got me through and helped me take those experiences and literally turn them into gold. In 1988, at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, on my ninth dive in the men's 3-meter springboard preliminaries, I struck my head on the board. Going into that Olympic event I was the favorite to win a gold medal, but in that split-second I became the "underdog." I was scared, having been diagnosed as HIV-positive six months prior, and aware that I was in a country that would have deported me if my status were known. It was what followed that made me realize the strength and power I had within me. I was taken to a room off the pool deck, where my head was sewn up. It wasn't bad, just four or five stitches. When my coach, Ron O'Brien, asked if I wanted to continue, I responded, without thinking, "We worked too long and hard to get there, and I don't want to give up without a fight." I firmly believe that you don't achieve greatness on your own. I drew inspiration from my coach and from an Indiana boy, Ryan White, a friend who suffered from hemophilia and contracted HIV from his clotting factor. He went on to become a national spokesperson for people with HIV, working tirelessly before his 1990 AIDS-related death to make us visible and get increased government funding. He was a fighter, and in that moment I needed to find that fighter in me. I set the board, and my dive was announced. I could hear an audible gasp from the audience. It was a similar dive to that in which I'd struck my head: a reverse one-and-a-half with three and a half twists. I patted my chest with a grimace on my face, and I heard a nervous chuckle from the crowd. It made me laugh a bit, and I realized these people wanted to see me succeed. Only 22 minutes passed between the moment I struck my head on the board and the execution of that dive. I took a breath and went forward, trusting my training, my coach, and a young boy in Indiana. I did that dive, and as it turned out, it was the highest-scoring dive of that Olympic Games. In that moment I became the toughest sissy in the world. I went on to repeat that dive during the finals and took home the gold medal. I never would have had that kind of strength and fortitude to succeed without my life's experiences, and I mostly attribute my strength in that moment to my tormentors. But it was only after I stopped playing the "victim" role that I truly began living a life of freedom. I found the will to learn and follow the path I was put on this Earth to follow. The experiences in which I felt "less-than" are the gems of my life, because I survived. Each of us has a hero inside us and a uniqueness that we may not see at first, because we are so concerned with "fitting in." We may have a different walk or talk, a different way of learning, a physical appearance that doesn't match others' expectations, or a different way of expressing ourselves. In time, in my own experience, I learned to celebrate my uniqueness, cherish who I am as a human being, and act out of love and compassion for my fellow human beings. And, to borrow my mom's saying, "I make everywhere I go better, because I was there." I practice that every day and live it to the best of my ability. To those who are being tormented, use those moments to find that inner self and that fortitude. It does get better!

Texas Cancer Center to Study New Blood Test

A blood test so sensitive that it can spot a single cancer cell lurking among a billion healthy ones is moving one step closer to being available at your doctor's office.
Boston scientists who invented the test and health care giant Johnson & Johnson announced Monday that they are joining forces to bring it to market. The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and three other big cancer centers also will start studies using the experimental test this year.
Stray cancer cells in the blood mean that a tumor has spread or is likely to, many doctors believe. A test that can capture such cells has the potential to transform care for many types of cancer, especially breast, prostate, colon and lung.
Initially, doctors want to use the test to try to predict what treatments would be best for each patient's tumor and find out quickly if they are working.
"This is like a liquid biopsy" that avoids painful tissue sampling and may give a better way to monitor patients than periodic imaging scans, said Dr. Daniel Haber, chief of Massachusetts General Hospital's cancer center and one of the test's inventors.
Ultimately, the test may offer a way to screen for cancer besides the mammograms, colonoscopies and other less-than-ideal methods used now.
"There's a lot of potential here, and that's why there's a lot of excitement," said Dr. Mark Kris, lung cancer chief at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. He had no role in developing the test, but Sloan-Kettering is one of the sites that will study it this year.
"Early detection of the cancer will improve the chances to cure the cancer and also improve the prognosis of the cancer," said Dr. Naveena Allada of Texas Oncology and Baylor Irving.
Many people have their cancers diagnosed through needle biopsies. These often do not provide enough of a sample to determine what genes or pathways control a tumor's growth. Or the sample may no longer be available by the time the patient gets sent to a specialist to decide what treatment to prescribe.

Bring it to Brownwood!

Tom Ford was poolside inspired in Brownwood. Bring it to Brownwood and get inspired.

Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and film director. He grew up mostly in Santa Fe, but was greatly influenced by his family's Texas heritage. At 17, he landed in New York and loved the flashy gay clubbing scene he found. After graduating form Parsons School of Design in 1985, he went on to work in fashion. He is famous for turning around the Gucci fashion house and creating his own label.

Fashion designer. Born Thomas Carlyle Ford on August 27, 1961, in Austin, Texas. His parents, Tom Ford, Sr. and Shirley Bunton, both worked as real estate agents, and Ford spent much of his childhood at his grandparents' ranch in the dusty town of Brownwood, Texas. His favorite childhood pastimes included lying out by his grandparents' pool and visiting Ralph the Swimming Pig—a popular tourist attraction in nearby Aquarena Springs. Ford also took an early interest in art and painting. "I was always very visual, always interested in design," he recalls. "I don't mean that I sat around at age 5 sketching clothes. But if my parents went out to dinner and left me alone, I would rearrange all the living room furniture before they came back home." Ford says that his parents "encouraged me to do anything. If I wanted art lessons, they found paint and a teacher."

Ford had two early role models in fashion: his mother and grandmother. "My mother was very chic, very classic," he recalls. "My paternal grandmother was very stylish in a very Texas way—everything big and flashy, from jewelry to car." Ford would later combine those two styles as he reinvented Gucci's image in the mid-1990s. "The images of beauty you get in your childhood stick with you for life," Ford later explained. "So there's a certain flashiness at Gucci—Texas-inspired—with a certain Western feel."

Bishop T.D. Jakes on Trayvon Martin Case: This Looks Like a Hate Crime, Pure and Simple

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963

“ The focus of this statement is on hate crimes related to 9/11. We wish not to dismiss other acts of hate that have been leveled against people of color and the gay and lesbian community in Texas.
For one example, the ACLU, with local concerned citizens, is currently investigating a rash of hate crime in Brownwood, Texas. We suspect at least 10 hate crimes in that town alone-including murders and even murders of witnesses to those hate crimes. Local officials have repeatedly refused to investigate or prosecute these crimes according to the mandates of the the Hate Crimes Act. In one instance, a field officer drafted a crime report which clearly documented race as the motive of the violent crime. Nevertheless, the local District Attorney's office still refused to prosecute this at all, much less as a hate crime. Our conclusion is that the law alone is not enough. The Texas Attorney General, or some external body, must be vested with full authority to prosecute these crimes or at least monitor the law's enforcement in some meaningful way. ”

New York’s Carnegie Deli Introduces “The Jetbow”

http://foodbeast.com/content/2012/03/25/new-yorks-carnegie-deli-introduces-the-jetbow/

'They blew up their poster boy' A Times Editorial

Published May 25, 2005

Pat Tillman inspired the country after 9/11, giving up his professional football career to fight terrorism as an Army Ranger. But that sacrifice apparently wasn't enough for the Army. It misled the public about Tillman's friendly fire death as it exploited the false version to mass market patriotism. This fraud dishonored a fallen soldier and deepened his family's anguish.

Tillman was killed in Afghanistan in April 2004 in what the Army first claimed was a heroic assault on a hilly nest amid a storm of enemy fire. Yet according to the most recent investigation, the Army had determined almost immediately that Tillman was killed accidentally by his own men. Some later burned his uniform and body armor. Within days of the incident, according to the Washington Post, top Army officials were told the death was by friendly fire, but the Army waited for weeks to disclose the real story, after a public memorial service burnished the mythical firefight.

The irony of it all is that Tillman never sought acclaim for leaving professional football. He was motivated by ideals and a love of his country, his family said - an obvious contrast with Army officials who tried to sugarcoat a reckless accident. In an interview with the Post, Tillman's parents said the Army's "lies" have made it harder for them to accept their son's death. "They realized that their recruiting efforts were going to go to hell in a handbasket if the truth about his death got out," Patrick Tillman Sr. told the Post. "They blew up their poster boy." His family had to replay Tillman's final moments and digest how a selfless soldier had been used. Pat Tillman and his parents deserved better.

Kay Bailey Hutchison, Big John Cornyn, Ken Mehlman, Lee Atwater, Arthur Finkelstein and Karl Rove know how much anti-gay sentiment there is in the Southern GOP base and especially the Texas GOP base. They all personally and politically benefited from these hate filled campaigns. These carefully crafted and planted seeds of hate do not go away with an apology, appointment or a nomination. I feel certain Robert is well aware of the dangers related to the conservative led anti-gay political atmosphere that has been created in the Lone Star State. Even though Texas is the midst of a historic and costly drought, many of these hate seeds have taken hold and flourished. Ask Kay Bailey Hutchison and Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price about the risks involved when they are inclusive of the LGBT community! Moderate Republicans in Texas are often targeted if they are seen as LGBT inclusive!

Nevertheless, the chance that he could win a second term reportedly is pushing gun owners to stockpile guns. “People are terrified he’s going to get [...]/p

Mark Greene, hunter and former member of Gun Owners for Obama, disagrees. He said he still owns guns - and still supports Obama.

"And I still have very little in common with the fear-mongers and bunker-mentality gun nuts who will tell any lie they think they can get away with to try and bring down this president they hate so vehemently and irrationally," he said.

White House Garden Yields a Ton of Produce, Literally!
http://www.ecorazzi.com/2011/07/19/white-house-garden-yields-a-ton-of-produce-literally/

Team Obama gets it! The community garden in poverty rich Brownwood Texas (funded with Stimulus funds) is doing great and really serving those who need it most. Some of the produce is provided to the Salvation Army "Loaves and Fishes" program. Thanks to Team Obama and many forward thinking folks across our country, good things are happening.

Senator Booted From Restaurant Over ‘Homophobic’ Views

Senator Booted From Restaurant Over ‘Homophobic’ Views: A Knoxville, Tenn., restaurant owner has drawn cheers and jeers for refusing to serve a state senator whose beliefs she viewed as homophobic. Republican state Sen. Stacey Campfield told ABC News he went out to brunch at The Bistro at Bijou restaurant on Sunday with some...

Pam Strickland: AIDS facts arrayed against Campfield

By Pam Strickland
Posted February 3, 2012 at 4 a.m.

In 2009, the most recent year for which the Tennessee Department of Health has statistics, 945 Tennesseans were diagnosed with HIV. Of those, 687 were males and 258 were females. Fourteen were men and women 65 or older. Six were females age 13 or younger.

Two hundred of those, or 21 percent, got the virus through unprotected heterosexual contact.

In all, from 2004 through 2009, the state Health Department reports that 23,020 Tennesseans were diagnosed with HIV. Of those, 1,311 were female and 5,994 were male. The virus was contacted via unprotected heterosexual sex for 1,222 of them.

During that time period, 7,305 Tennesseans with HIV died.

No one reported that they got the deadly virus from having sex with a monkey, which seems to be what state Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, believes. Campfield, the state legislator that most everyone loves to hate, went from being a silly embarrassment last week to just plain dangerous when he got on a Sirius radio program and said that HIV could be spread through unprotected heterosexual sex only rarely.

Those of us who have been exasperated with him and his nonsense understood completely when Martha Boggs, owner of The Bistro at the Bijou, asked Campfield to leave rather than serve him brunch Sunday.

Boggs reportedly saw him and his party waiting for a table, came out of the kitchen and followed her gut, which was to tell him something to the effect of, "Get out of here you homophobe. I don't want you in my restaurant."

It must have been cathartic, even if it didn't follow the teachings of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Ghandi. And I must say that I am with those who have The Bistro on the top of their list of dining priorities.

The Health Department statistics aren't on Campfield's side. The senator had said: "My understanding is that it is virtually — not completely, but virtually — impossible to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex."

Another thing we know is that he's not an expert on is bullying: "That bullying thing is the biggest lark out there," Campfield said.

He had the nerve to say this after two Tennessee youths committed suicide within the last two months. Jacob Rogers, a senior at Cheatham County Central High School, committed suicide in December after dropping out of school because of bullying. Philip Parker, 14, of Gordonsville High School committed suicide in January because of bullying at school.

Would Campfield dare stand face to face with the parents of either of these young men and repeat his claim that bullying is a lark? I'd like to see him try.

Among the other nonsensical and mean-spirited legislation Campfield has introduced this session is Senate Bill 2583, which would reduce Temporary Assistance to Needy Families payments for parents or caretakers whose children fail to maintain satisfactory progress in school.

Others have been saying that maybe, just maybe, the Republicans finally will run someone against him who will be credible, someone who will bring out more than just the ultra-conservative ditto-heads at election time.

I say that it's time for Gov. Bill Haslam to stop being so passive regarding Campfield. First, the governor needs to call out Campfield. If Haslam can't get Campfield to step down, then it's time for the governor to cash in his good will and secure a sure-fire victor to run against the not-so-good senator.

Because many of us have but one prayer, the line from The Great Litany: "Good Lord, deliver us."

Went there after some business on a Monday afternoon. Had Linda's spiked tomato bisque which is possibly some of the best soup I have ever had.
Next the homemade chicken salad sandwich - this was perfection! Half cut red seedless grapes in the mix was the right amount of sweet and texture. The bread used was amazing (and I dont normally gush about chicken salad).
This is a must visit if u find urself in Brownwood.

Steve's Market and Deli, Dining from Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast

Steve's Market and Deli is a fun place to eat when you are staying with us at Star of Texas Bed and Breakfast. They serve a great menu of things like, Black Bean Bisque Soup or Katies Chipotle Corn Bisque Soup. A favorite sandwich is the Ray Bourbon with a great bourbon sauce or the Shrimp Nachos. You will also find desserts like Dublin Dr. Pepper cake and great teas of coffee. They serve Fair Trade Peace Coffee.
They are only open during the week from Monday to Friday from 11 to 3. So if you are here during the week try them out for lunch.
